If I had to choose one symbol that captures the character of the Rideau Lakes, it would be the wind bent pine.

They're everywhere once you start looking for them. Clinging to granite shorelines, leaning out over the water, shaped by decades of wind, storms, and harsh winters. They aren't perfect trees, and that's exactly why I love them.

This painting began with that pine.

I've passed trees like this countless times while exploring the Rideau. Some seem to defy gravity, reaching out over open water as though they're searching for sunlight. Others have been twisted and shaped by the elements for so long that their silhouettes become unmistakable landmarks on the shoreline.

What draws me to them is their resilience.

The granite beneath them offers very little soil. The winds off the lake never stop. Yet year after year they continue to grow, adapting to whatever nature throws at them. There's something inspiring about that.

The autumn shoreline in the distance provides a backdrop of gold, orange, and deep green, but the real story is happening in the foreground. The pine commands the scene, its branches sweeping across the sky and echoing the movement of the water below. I wanted viewers to feel the energy of the wind and the strength of the tree at the same time.

As I painted, I found myself thinking about how often these trees become companions on the water. You see them from a distance and immediately recognize where you are. They become markers in your memory. A favourite fishing spot. A sheltered bay. The entrance to a channel. Over time they become part of your relationship with the lake.

Wind Bent Pine is part of my ongoing Rideau Lakes Series, inspired by the islands, shorelines, forests, and waterways that define this remarkable landscape. It's a celebration of the places that have shaped my experience of the Rideau and the natural features that continue to draw me back season after season.

For me, the wind bent pine isn't just a tree. It's a reminder that some of the most beautiful things in nature are shaped by time, persistence, and the forces they endure.
