There are stretches of the Rideau where very little seems to happen.
No cottages. No docks. No boats passing by.
Just water, rock, trees, and sky.
Those are often the places I find myself appreciating the most.
I've spent years exploring the Rideau Lakes, and while the cabins and islands often catch my attention, there are moments when the landscape itself becomes the story. This painting grew out of one of those moments. Looking across a broad expanse of water toward a distant shoreline, I was struck by how simple the scene was and how powerful that simplicity felt.
The title The Quiet Reach comes from that sense of distance and stillness.
There is nothing here demanding your attention. No focal point beyond the shoreline itself. Instead, your eye moves slowly across the water, following the rhythm of the waves before settling into the band of autumn colour stretching across the horizon.
What drew me in was the contrast between the cool blues of the lake and the warmth of the shoreline. In autumn, the Rideau often feels as though it's glowing from within. The granite takes on warmer tones, the deciduous trees light up in gold, and even familiar shorelines seem transformed for a few brief weeks each year.
As I painted this piece, I found myself thinking about why I return to these lakes again and again. It's not always the dramatic views or the famous places. More often, it's scenes like this. Quiet moments where the landscape is allowed to speak for itself.
The water, the shoreline, and the sky all feel connected. Nothing competes. Everything belongs.
The Quiet Reach is part of my ongoing Rideau Lakes Series, inspired by the waterways, islands, forests, and changing seasons that define this remarkable part of Ontario. These paintings are rooted in places I've explored firsthand and moments that have stayed with me long after I've left the water.
Sometimes the most memorable parts of a journey are the quiet stretches in between.
