There are places on the Rideau that feel less like destinations and more like old friends.

Davis Lock is one of those places for me.

I've spent countless hours here over the years. Walking the shoreline, watching boats move through the lock, painting along the water, and simply sitting quietly as the day changes around me. No matter how many times I visit, I always find something new to notice.

What drew me to this scene was the channel itself. The way the water gently winds through the landscape, connecting one place to another. It feels like an invitation to keep exploring, to see what's around the next bend.

The boathouses along the shoreline have always fascinated me. They were built with purpose, but over time they've become part of the character of the landscape. They belong here. The same can be said for the towering pines that line the channel. Shaped by decades of wind, weather, and changing seasons, they have become landmarks for anyone who knows these waters.

This painting is really about light.

That golden moment near the end of the day when the sun sits low in the sky and everything seems to glow. The water reflects the colours of the evening, the shadows stretch across the channel, and familiar places suddenly feel almost magical. It's a scene I've witnessed many times at Davis Lock, and one I never get tired of.

As I painted, I wasn't trying to document a specific moment as much as capture a feeling. The feeling of heading home after a day on the water. The quiet satisfaction of slowing down. The sense that you've found a place where time moves a little differently.

That's what Davis Lock has always represented for me.

The Channel Home is part of my ongoing Rideau Lakes Series, inspired by the waterways, locks, islands, and shorelines that make this region one of the most beautiful places in Ontario. These paintings are rooted in real places and personal experiences, celebrating the landscapes that continue to draw me back year after year.
