This is the second piece in my Walk Along the Canal series—another moment caught along the Rideau Canal, but this time in the kind of morning light you only get for a few days each year.

The Bank Street Bridge is one of Ottawa’s most iconic landmarks, and easily one of the prettiest points along the canal. It’s also one of the four bridges that lead you straight into the Glebe—a neighbourhood that continues to shape this whole series.

On this particular morning, the sun was low enough to slide under the arches and light up the water in a way that stopped me in my tracks. Morning light like this is rare—it hits for only a brief window at this time of year—and I knew immediately I wanted to capture it.

So, like the first piece in the series, I pushed aside what I was working on and let this one take over.

This painting became a continuation of that feeling: quiet, bright, fleeting, and unmistakably Ottawa.

This piece is looking for its forever home.
If it speaks to you, I’d love to hear from you.
