Sisters Bay at Dusk — Sand Lake

There is something about open water that keeps pulling me back. The lakes, rivers, and quiet shorelines around this part of Ontario have shaped the way I see the world and the way I paint. They carry history, memory, weather, silence, and movement all at once.

This piece is really about holding onto a moment and a feeling. That last light at dusk, the wind moving through the pines, the glow on the water, and those small cabins tucked into the shoreline as if they have always belonged there. Places like this have a soul to them. A real sense of place.

I have always loved these old boathouses and cabins along the rocks. They endure season after season through storms, ice, heat, and time itself. Many of them were built generations ago, yet they are still standing, still holding on to the edge of the land. There is something deeply grounding in that. A reminder that these places existed long before us and, if we care for them properly, may outlast all of us too.

When I paint scenes like this, I am trying to capture more than the landscape. I want to capture the emotional connection we have to these waterways and the memories tied to them. Summer evenings, the sound of water against the shore, the feeling of arriving at the cottage after a long drive, or simply sitting quietly watching the light disappear across the lake.

We are incredibly lucky to still have places like this. Untouched corners where the land, water, and history still feel connected. That feeling is something I never get tired of painting.
