This view never gets old. Every time I cruise this stretch of the Rideau Canal, I’m amazed that these narrow gaps between massive lakes are navigable by all the beautiful boats that pass through. This spot—just above Chaffeys Lock and just below Newboro Lock—is one of those tricky, quiet corners that becomes part of your weekly rhythm if you live out here. For us, it’s part of the pilgrimage to Westport for supplies by boat.
Leaving Elbow Channel captures the sense of motion and openness as you round the corner and head out into the lake. The windswept trees and rocky points are sculpted by time, weather, and water—classic features of this landscape that always grab my eye. This is the first of a three-part series that tells the story of movement along the Rideau. It’s painted not just from memory, but from a life lived in and around this place.
