There are places on the Rideau that don't need a landmark to make them memorable. Sometimes it's simply where two lakes meet.

Maggie's Bay sits where Opinicon Lake and Sand Lake come together near Davis Lock, and it's a place I've found myself returning to over the years. There's something about the shoreline here that always catches my attention. The granite reaches into the water, the pines lean toward the lake, and the whole scene seems to slow you down.

I've always been fascinated by the wind shaped pines that grow along this stretch of shoreline. They aren't tall because the conditions are easy. They're tall because they've spent decades adapting to rock, wind, and weather. Their branches twist toward the light, and each tree develops its own unique character. To me, they are every bit as much a part of the Rideau as the water itself.

When I painted Maggie's Bay, I wanted the shoreline to feel alive. The bright blues of the lake contrast with the warm granite and the rich greens of the pines, creating a scene that feels unmistakably Canadian. Rather than painting every detail, I focused on the energy of the landscape and the feeling of arriving at one of my favourite corners of the Rideau.

I've spent countless hours exploring these lakes by boat, often with a sketchbook close at hand. Many of my paintings begin with a quick sketch or a photograph taken from the water before evolving into something more expressive back in the studio. This piece is one of those memories brought to canvas.

Maggie's Bay is part of my ongoing Rideau Lakes Series, inspired by the islands, shorelines, and waterways that have become such an important part of my life. These are real places that I've explored and returned to time and again, each with its own character and quiet beauty.
