There is a point every autumn on the Rideau when the landscape seems to change overnight.

One week the shoreline is green. The next, it feels as though someone has turned up the colour. Golds, oranges, and deep reds begin to appear along the water, and every bay seems to offer a completely different view.

This painting was inspired by one of those days.

What first caught my attention wasn't the shoreline itself but the lone pine leaning out over the water. I've always been drawn to trees like this. They spend their lives fighting wind, weather, and thin soil, yet somehow they continue to grow. The more twisted and imperfect they become, the more character they seem to have.

Across the lake, the autumn colours stretch along the shoreline like a ribbon of gold. It's a scene I've encountered countless times while exploring the Rideau Lakes, and yet it never gets old. Every year feels a little different. The colours arrive at their own pace, the light changes, and familiar places take on an entirely new personality.

As I painted this piece, I wanted to capture that contrast between the calm blue water and the intensity of the shoreline beyond. The lake feels quiet and still, while the trees across the bay seem alive with energy and movement. Together they create the balance that makes this season so special.

What I love most about autumn on the Rideau is that it reminds me to slow down. Summer is often about activity, boats, visitors, and long days on the water. Autumn feels quieter. More reflective. It's a season that invites you to pause and simply take in the landscape.
