I debated naming this work the “Sand Lake Pines" This piece celebrates the rugged beauty of Sand Lake on the Rideau Canal. The iconic island, with its weathered pines clinging to ancient rock, is a timeless representation of the natural history and resilience of this region. For over 40 years, this island has been the heart of my family's summers on the canal, a place for swimming, fishing, and soaking in the sun. The enduring tension between the steadfast trees and the elements inspires my sketches and paintings. I hope this work captures the spirit of strength and harmony that defines this cherished landscape.

Summer over Davis - CUMULUS Series

"Summer Over Davis" is inspired by one of the iconic spots on Sand Lake, part of the Rideau Canal. As you leave the lock station, heading towards Jones Falls and then on to Kingston, you'll pass this beautiful set of trees hanging from the edge of the shoreline. They seem to be holding back the elements—the bold sun and the wind—protecting the forest behind them. I love how they sway and move with the breeze, almost dancing in the wind.

This painting was created from my dock, on a day when the clouds were moving fast and changing quickly. I had to work quickly to capture their shape, energy, and movement before they disappeared. I was so inspired by the experience that it led to the creation of the entire Cumulus Series, which I painted outdoors at my cottage over a seven-day period. It felt like the perfect combination of elements—the sky, the light, and the energy of the moment all came together.

Nestled in a bay on Lake Opinicon, just outside Upper Davis Lock Bay on the Rideau Canal, lies a tiny island that has been a haven of love and laughter for many years. This painting captures the serene moment just after sunset, when the sunbathers, boaters, and swimmers have retreated indoors. The lake is calm, and though the gathering continues within the cozy cabin, we only catch a glimpse of the warm light inside. The subtle chatter of family and friends fills the evening air. I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved painting it.

Suspended - CUMULUS Series

Suspended is inspired by Indian Lake, a truly scenic section of the Rideau Canal, known for its dozens of back bays and many kilometres of shoreline to explore. These lakes, with their winding shorelines and numerous islands, can be paddled even when the wind is up. But Indian Lake is especially dear to me—it features one of the most picturesque cottage cliff shorelines along the canal, leading to a small, hidden cut through to the Clear Lake Jumping Rock.

This painting captures the view as you leave Chaffey’s Lock, looking down towards a tiny cut on the far left. If you don't know where it is, you might miss it—it's one of the narrowest cuts on the canal, rivaled only by the Quarters on the way to Jones Falls. That day, the clouds overhead as we made our way to Westport were mesmerizing, and I was struck by how the light and movement in the sky felt suspended in time.

Devil Lake feels huge, not just because of the water but because of the sky. There’s nothing crowding it—just wide-open space stretching forever. During the day, the sky is this massive blue dome, with big, beautiful clouds rolling through like slow-moving brushstrokes. Sometimes they’re bright and crisp against the blue, other times they build up, heavy and dramatic, casting shadows over the lake. Sunrise and sunset are unreal, with colors melting into the water so perfectly it’s hard to tell where the lake ends and the sky begins. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop, breathe, and actually feel small in the best way possible.

This piece, Fluid Imprints, was inspired by a moment I experienced at Newboro Lake on the Rideau Canal. It’s one of the many small islands adrift in the middle of this vast, peaceful lake. I was drawn to the big skies and the way the fall colours were slowly making their way into the landscape in the distance. At the same time, the small cabin on the island felt the full force of the warm, hard sun, low on the horizon, against that expansive blue sky.

What really captivated me was how the movement in the clouds seemed to play off the stillness of the pine trees, filling the empty spaces on the island. There’s something about the balance between the dynamic energy of the sky and the quiet, solid presence of the trees and cabin that really resonated with me.

This piece is a reflection of that moment in time—where the forces of nature and the serenity of the landscape come together in a harmonious, fluid dance.

Artist Statement: The Cumulus Series

Andrew D Milne Impressionistic Landscape Artist

Cumulus is more than an art show; it’s an invitation to journey through the seasons and immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural world. As you experience the exhibition, you’ll encounter a series of impressionistic landscapes that reflect the essence of our environment. These works offer moments to pause, reflect, and connect with the rhythm of nature, celebrating the beauty of the world around us.

While not every piece features clouds, each painting captures a unique moment in time—tranquil vistas bathed in sunlight, dynamic scenes echoing the moods of the seasons, and horizons both familiar and new. These works represent a year’s exploration and creation, blending light, color, and emotion to tell a cohesive story about our ever-changing landscapes.

The title Cumulus draws inspiration from the symbolism of clouds, embodying transformation, spontaneity, and the fleeting beauty of transient moments. Like the creative process itself, these clouds remind us of the importance of embracing change and finding connection in the world around us.

Through this exhibition, my goal is to bring you face-to-face with the wonder of nature—its subtle nuances and grand spectacles—and to inspire reflection on your own relationship with the environment. This series invites you to immerse yourself in the landscapes that shape our experiences, evoking a range of emotions and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Thank you for joining me on this journey and for supporting my work. I’m excited to share the beauty of Cumulus with you.

Warm regards,
Andrew D. Milne
