Some of the most memorable places on the Rideau aren't the large cottages or the grand waterfront homes. They're the little boathouses and cabins that seem to have grown naturally out of the shoreline.

I've always loved finding places like this. Tucked against the rocks, sheltered by a few pines, and sitting right at the water's edge. They aren't trying to impress anyone. They're simply there to serve a purpose and to enjoy the view.

What caught my attention with this one was its simplicity. Just enough room for a deck, a roof overhead, and a place to sit and watch the lake. It feels like the kind of spot where mornings begin with a coffee and evenings end with the sound of water against the rocks.

As I travel through the Rideau Lakes, I often wonder about the stories hidden behind these little structures. How many summers have passed through here? How many children learned to swim from this shoreline? How many fish stories were told from that deck? These places become repositories of family history. Year after year, they quietly collect memories.

The warm red roof became the focal point of the painting for me. Against the cool blues of the water and the fresh greens of the shoreline, it creates a sense of welcome. Even from across the lake, your eye is drawn toward it.

What I enjoy most about painting cabins and boathouses is that they're never really about the buildings themselves. They're about people's connection to a place. They're about finding a small corner of the world that feels like home.

The Little Boathouse is part of my ongoing Rideau Canal Cabin Bunkie Series, inspired by the real cabins, boathouses, and shoreline retreats I've sketched and photographed while exploring the Rideau Lakes. These places may occupy only a small piece of land, but they often hold a lifetime of stories.
