Some places just feel like they've been gathering people for generations.
As I've travelled through the Rideau Lakes over the years, I've been drawn to cabins like this one. Not because of their size or architecture, but because they tell a story. You can almost sense that this wasn't built for one person or one season. It feels like a place that grew over time as a family grew around it.
The main cabin, the little boathouse, the rocky shoreline, and the pines standing watch overhead all suggest a place that has been loved and cared for over many years. The kind of place where every generation has added something of its own. A new dock. An extra bunkie. A favourite chair overlooking the water.
When I see cabins like this, I can't help but wonder about the memories they've collected. Family dinners on the porch. Early morning fishing trips. Kids spending entire summers barefoot and sunburned. Grandparents watching it all unfold from the shade of the trees. These places become far more than buildings. They become part of a family's history.
What drew me to paint this scene was how perfectly everything seemed to fit together. The cabin doesn't sit on the island; it feels rooted to it. The granite, the pines, the water, and the buildings have all become part of the same story.
I wanted the painting to capture that sense of permanence. Not permanence in the physical sense, but in the way certain places stay with us long after we've left them. We carry them in our memories, and they become part of who we are.
The Family Camp is part of my ongoing Rideau Canal Cabin Bunkie Series, inspired by the real cabins, islands, and shoreline retreats I've sketched while exploring the Rideau Lakes. Many of these places occupy only a small footprint on the landscape, yet they hold generations of stories, traditions, and family memories.
