Some cabins seem to announce themselves from across the lake. Others quietly become part of the shoreline. This one sits somewhere in between.

I was drawn to the way this little cabin occupied the point, surrounded by rock, wind, and water. It isn't a large property. In fact, like so many places along the Rideau, it only has a small piece of land to call its own. Yet it feels completely at home there, as though the point was made for it.

One of the things I love most about exploring the Rideau Lakes is discovering places like this. They're real cabins, built decades ago by families who saw something special in a tiny island or rocky shoreline. They remind me that you don't need acres of waterfront to create a place that matters. Sometimes all you need is enough room for a cabin, a few pines, and a dock.

The title Storm Light on the Point came from the contrast I imagined while painting it. The sky feels heavy, almost as though a summer storm is about to roll across the lake, while the last warm light catches the shoreline and the cabin. Those moments never last long, but they're often the ones I remember most.

As I painted, I found myself thinking about the families who have called places like this home for generations. The stories shared on the porch, the children racing down to the water, the quiet evenings after everyone else has gone to bed. Cabins like these become part of a family's history. Long after the builders are gone, the memories remain.

This painting is part of my ongoing Rideau Canal Cabin Bunkie Series, inspired by the real cabins, islands, and hidden shorelines I've sketched while exploring the Rideau Lakes. Every one has its own personality, and every one has a story waiting to be told.
