Macintosh Lake is one of those places that feels like the real Algonquin. Deep in the interior of Algonquin Park, it takes some effort to get there, which is probably part of what makes it so special.

I’ve always been fascinated by the little rocky islands scattered across the lakes and rivers of the park. Pine and juniper trees somehow find enough soil to take hold, growing right out of the Canadian Shield. Over time, the wind, weather and long Algonquin winters shape them into these wonderful, twisted forms.

In this painting, I wanted to capture that feeling of looking through the trees and out across the water. The bright colours, loose brushwork and layers of pine are my interpretation of the rugged Ontario wilderness and the landscape I’ve come to love through years of canoeing, camping, sketching and painting in Algonquin Park.

For me, these small islands are as much a part of Algonquin as the big lakes themselves. Simple, rugged and unmistakably Canadian.
