Every now and then, while exploring the Rideau, I'll come across a place that makes me smile.
Not because it's grand or dramatic, but because someone looked at a tiny patch of rock surrounded by water and thought, "This will do."
I've always admired that spirit. The willingness to carve out a little place for yourself in the landscape and make it your own. Places like this remind me that some of the most cherished properties on the Rideau aren't the biggest ones. They're the smallest.
This cabin sits on what feels like just enough land to support it. A few windswept pines, a handful of rocks, and a foundation of granite that has probably been there for thousands of years. Somehow it all works together. The cabin doesn't dominate the island. It belongs to it.
When I paint these small island cabins, I often find myself thinking about the people behind them. The family who first built it. The excitement of arriving by boat on a Friday afternoon. The sound of waves against the rocks at night. The traditions that slowly build over decades until a place becomes part of a family's story.
That's what I love about these cabins. They're more than structures. They're memory makers.
The warm evening sky and brilliant reflections on the water drew me into this scene. I wanted the painting to feel optimistic and welcoming, like one of those perfect summer evenings when the lake seems to glow and there's nowhere else you'd rather be.
Island of One is part of my ongoing Rideau Canal Cabin Bunkie Series, inspired by the real cabins, cottages, and island retreats I've discovered and sketched while exploring the Rideau Lakes. These places may occupy only a tiny footprint on the landscape, but they hold generations of stories within their walls.
