There are cabins you see from a distance, and then there are the ones you almost miss.
I came across places like this while exploring the Rideau by boat. Tucked back into the shoreline and surrounded by towering white pines, they reveal themselves for just a moment before disappearing behind the trees again. Those are often the ones that stay with me the longest.
What I love about these cabins is how they become part of the landscape instead of competing with it. They aren't built to dominate the shoreline. They simply found a place where they fit. Over time the trees have grown around them, the rocks have weathered beneath them, and together they've become one.
As I painted this piece, I wasn't thinking about architecture. I was thinking about what it must feel like to arrive here after a long week. To tie up the boat, hear the wind moving through the pines, and know that for the next few days, life will slow down.
Every cabin has its own story. Every family leaves its mark. Children grow up swimming from the dock, grandparents sit on the porch with coffee in hand, and another generation falls in love with the same little piece of shoreline. That's what interests me most. These aren't just buildings. They're places where memories are made.
The soft evening light filtering through the trees and the quiet water beyond gave this painting its mood. I wanted the cabin to feel as though it had always belonged here, quietly waiting among the pines for another summer.
Hidden Among the Pines is part of my ongoing Rideau Canal Cabin Bunkie Series, inspired by the real cabins, islands, and hidden corners I've discovered while exploring one of Canada's most beautiful waterways.
