"Davis Lock Gate" is my personal canvas interpretation of one of the engineering marvels nestled in the heart of nature. This 30x60 inch artwork is an homage to the ingenuity that blends so seamlessly with the surrounding beauty of the landscape. As I painted this, I was inspired by the quiet strength of the lock gate, a silent guardian that has stood the test of time and elements.

With every stroke of my brush, I wanted to capture not just the structure of the lock gate but also the play of light and shadows, the rich textures of stone, and the organic flow of water and foliage around it. This painting speaks to the intersection where human craftsmanship meets the wild, untamed beauty of the natural world.

The purples and blues of the shadows contrast with the yellows and greens of the leaves, highlighting the changing seasons and the passage of time. This is more than just a picture—it's a story about heritage, about the paths that connect us, and about the quiet moments of reflection that places like this inspire.

This piece belongs to someone who appreciates the blend of history and nature, someone who looks at a lock gate and sees not just a function, but a piece of art sculpted by hands and time.

Additional Notes: Davis Lock is known as a “solitude lock,” one of the most remote locks on the Rideau. It’s named after Walter Davis Jr. who built a sawmill here in about 1818. It features the best preserved example of a defensible lockmaster’s house on the Rideau( see top right). Built in 1842, this stone house served as home to the local lockmaster until 1959. The building was fully restored in 1999. The view, from this house into Sand Lake is, except for the navigation buoys, essentially what Colonel By would have seen when the canal opened in 1832. An amazing place to visit and sketch… Also known to be the lock station furthest away from a village or main highway.
